Overview

Shillong College was inaugurated on 15th of August, 1956, and began with few students at Jail Road Boys High School. Shri Sudhindra Chandra Datta, a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics in St. Anthony’s College, became the founder Principal. Before the establishment of North Eastern Hill University in 1972, Shillong College was affiliated to Gauhati University. The birth, growth and development of the Shillong College is a cumulative result of the immense sacrifice, dedication, hard work and perseverance of a good number of well meaning selfless individuals as well as some prominent organizations of Shillong and also the region as a whole.


GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COLLEGE:

  1. -To provide quality education to all aspiring students through meaningful academic and professional courses keeping in mind the special needs of the economically, educationally and socially disadvantaged segment of the society.
  2. To inculcate knowledge and need-based work skills so that the products of the college find themselves prepared for employment and self-employment avenues as and when required.
  3. To help students to discover and tap their fullest potential through appropriate co- and extra-curricular activities leading to integrated personality-development in order to become responsible and productive citizens of the country.
  4. To encourage and promote moral, secular, scientific and nation-building values so that the students respect, protect and nurture the rich composite culture of the country and of each of its constituent units.
  5. To create awareness, concern and care for environment by gearing various collegiate activities to sustainable environmental practices encompassing the State’s land, water, flora and fauna.


AFFLIATION

  1. -The College is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University, Shillong (Under Graduate Courses).
  2. -The College is also affiliated to Meghalaya Board of School Education, Tura (HSSLC Courses).
  3. -The College is under Deficit Grants-in-Aid system of Government of Meghalaya and conforms to State government Rules & Regulations.
  4. -The College is governed by a Governing Body, duly constituted as per UGC Guidelines and State Government Rules.
  5. -The overall management of different courses offered by the College is looked after by Shillong College Educational Society (Registration No. : E.16(Rs)5/of 2006/71).


Introduction

Shillong College Shillong, an 'A+' Grade institution in North East India was founded on the 15th of August, 1956 and has striven, since its inception, to turn the youth of the North East into leaders of their own society- bureaucrats, businessmen, judges, lawyers, engineers, media persons, social activists and others.

Starting from very humble origins in 1956, with 35 students on its rolls, the College has grown into a multi-faceted, multi-faculty institution. Today it has two sprawling campuses dedicated entirely to imparting quality education.

We envision Shillong College as a Centre of Excellence for Wisdom, a beacon of hope, a model embodiment of the ideal upon which our Great Nation has been built.

  • To endeavour to provide to all sections of society, quality yet affordable education, and create a knowledge-based society where avenues of success are readily available to all sections of the society, both urban and rural.
  • To provide the right atmosphere that will facilitate the tapping, honing and refinement of latent potential talent and skill through appropriate academic, extra and co-curricular activities.
  • To remain socially committed, with special impetus on catering to the needs of the socially, economically and educationally disadvantaged groups.
  • To be attuned to the emerging needs of the young generations in a world of constant flux and to inculcate knowledge and need-based work skills.
  • To constantly update, equip, improve and evolve ourselves in all aspects in order to become more proficient and efficient.
  • To not only help our students become job-proficient but to sensitize, encourage and promote moral, a secular, scientific and nation-building virtues.

UGC Recognition

Shillong College is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. This recognition enables the college to receive grants and funding from the UGC for infrastructure development, faculty improvement, and research activities.

NAAC Accreditation

The college has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The accreditation process evaluates the institution on various parameters including teaching-learning, research, infrastructure, governance, and student support.
