Department of Political Science
About the Department
The Department of Political Science initially functioned as part of the Department of
Economics and did not exist as a separate discipline. Following the bifurcation of the
Economics Department in 1962, Political Science emerged as an independent department
under the leadership of (Late) S.R. Bhattacharjee. Along with him, Shri A.B. Das and Dr. S.
Sen—who later joined North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) as Reader in the Department of
Continuing Education—made invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the
Department. After the untimely demise of Shri S.R. Bhattacharjee, Smt. N. Sinha, who had
joined the Department in 1984, assumed the role of Head of Department in 1989. Upon her
retirement, Smt. L.P. Shadap took over as Head in December 2008 and served in the position
until her retirement in 2018. She was succeeded by Smt. V.R. Solomon, who led the
Department with dedication until her retirement in November 2023. At present, the
Department is headed by Mrs. Amina Marbaniang. The rich legacy of the Department
continues to be nurtured and advanced by a team of committed and dedicated faculty
members.
