About the Department
The Department of Environmental Science, Shillong College traces its origins back to 2009, when it was established as the Department of Environmental Studies. In its formative years, it primarily served undergraduate students across all streams by offering the compulsory Environmental Studies course, as mandated by the Honourable Supreme Court of India.
In response to the growing complexity of environmental challenges, the vast scope of the discipline, its limited representation in the region, and the keen interest of students, a formal Department of Environmental Science was instituted in 2017 with the introduction of the Honours Programme. This marked a significant transition from a general service department to a full-fledged academic unit dedicated to advanced teaching and research in the field.
Today, the Department remains steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence and continues to enrich the college community. Its vision extends beyond the institution, striving to foster environmental awareness, responsibility, and sustainable growth in society and the nation at large.
