THE TABLEAU PRESENTED BY SHILLONG COLLEGE IN THE AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2009 ORGANISED BY TOURISM DEPARTMENT, GOVERNMENT OF MEGHALAYA AND MEGHALAYA TOURISM DEVELOPMENT FORUM WAS ADJUDGED AS THE BEST TABLEAU AND WAS AWARDED THE FIRST PRIZE ALONG WITH A CASH PRIZE OF RS. 70,000/- .
The Autumn Festival was held during October 31-November 8 2009 and the festival kicked off with the tableau presentation on 31-10-2009. The theme this year for the Autumn Festival was “Enchanting Folklores”, which was an initiative to explore how folklores compliment tourism in the culturally vibrant state. The tableau parade showcased the local stories behind every tourist spots in Meghalaya and comprised of colourful floats by schools, colleges and institutions depicting the theme. It was flagged off from Madan Iew Rynghep (Fire Brigade Ground) and the procession converged at Polo Ground via Don Bosco point, Dhankheti, Barik, Khyndai Lad (Police Bazar), Raj Bhawan and Ward’s Lake.
2. OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE STUDENTS:
- Leki Suiam of the college won the Second Prize in the “Science Fiction Story Writing Competition on Astronomy and Related Subjects” organized as a part of “Year of Astronomy 2009” by the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya and the prizes were awarded at a function held on 28th August 2009 at the Shillong Science Centre, NEHU Permanent Campus, Mawlai Mawkynroh, Shillong.
- Abednego Chhaihlo of the College was awarded the Certificate of Merit and prizes for securing the FIRST position in the Essay Competition, College Level, organised by the Department of Forests and Environment, Government of Meghalaya, as a part of Wildlife Week Celebration 2009.
- Shillong College student team won the 2nd prize in the Khasi Debate competition held at North Eastern Hill University.
- Following students have selected through competitive examinations and awarded Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search Senior Scholarship (JBNSTS –Doner Senior Scholarship 2008): Shri Kamminthang Hilsiam, Shri T. Lianminthang, Shri Thangmuanlal Khamte, Shri Lalring Oma Darlong and Shri Mangmichael.
- Awareness Generation Week for effective Implementation of R.T.I. Act, 2005, organised by Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute, Shillong. Following Students have excelled in Slogan Competition held conducted on October 2009
3. TEACHING STAFF:
- Shri Hector Marwein, Lecturer, Department of Khasi, has been appointed as Vice Chairman, State Level Public Grievances Committee by the Government of Meghalaya since 18-06-2009.
- Smt. Amanda Basaiawamoit, Lecturer, Department of English, was awarded Director General’s Plaque of Honour for standing First in order of Merit at the PRCN Course held at OTA Gwalior from 20 September, 2008 to 20 December, 2008.
4. INTER-COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
The Shillong College Basketball Teams (both Boys and Girls) won the Runner-up Trophies in the Inter-College Invitational Basketball Tournament 2009 organised by St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the College. Shri David Lalmalsawm Hmar of B. Com. (1st year) and Smt. Grazel N. Nongbri of B. A. (1st year) students of the College received the Best Players awards in the Boys and Girls category respectively which included a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- each.
